We are seeking a Staff Accountant to join our Finance team.


About the job

The Staff Accountant will report to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). The desired candidate will have experience working with nonprofits. The successful candidate will join the Finance team at Taproot Foundation to support the organization with various financial operations, such as payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable functions. The ideal candidate will have an excellent understanding of bookkeeping functions such as payroll, posting journal entries, bank reconciliations, balancing accounts, billing, and payables. In addition, the candidate will have experience supporting strategic processes including annual planning and benefit planning. The ideal candidate is dependable, versatile, open to learning and growing, and able work well with colleagues and external partners.


What you'll achieve

  • Maintain and update accounting records and files.
  • Work independently on routine and assigned bookkeeping and accounting tasks.
  • Compile all accounts payable, recording transactions, and prepare weekly payments of invoices.
  • Manage accounts receivable, including recording invoices and posting payments.
  • Manage monthly reconciliations with Taproot fractional Controller.
  • Manage the payroll process, including processing payroll, verifying data, and ensuring accurate and timely payment to employees.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates and payroll deductions.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations related to payroll, including tax withholdings, benefits, and payroll deductions.
  • Provide finance support for annual planning and benefit planning strategic efforts.
  • Provide financial support with external 403b partner with monthly and annual reconciliations in collaboration with fractional controller.
  • Bill.com reconciliation with monthly finance reporting.
  • Communicate with employees regarding payroll-related inquiries and issues.
  • Reconcile payroll accounts and resolve any discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Review and approve the recording of contributions (gifts) and ensure all gift backup documentation is maintained and provided to the Development department.
  • Support the annual audit process by gathering necessary account information and documents.
  • Provide project management and administrative support to the COO, as needed.

Job requirements

About you

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in accounting.
  • Three plus years of experience in non-profit accounting or similar accounting.
  • Proficient in excel and Microsoft office software and financial accounting software, preferably QuickBooks Online and Salesforce.
  • Strong accounting skills; understanding of posting entries within an electronic accounting software, balancing debits and credits and accrual methods.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and financial values
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a timely manner to maintain compliance with deadlines.
  • Excellent organization skills, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality of employees’ and clients’ private information.
  • Experience with ADP systems a plus or another PEO.

Additional Information:

  • This is a remote position with minimal travel required. Taproot is accepting applications from candidates based anywhere in the continental United States.
  • For this role, the estimated base salary range is between $51,319 - $80,309 annually, subject to locality adjustments. The actual base salary will vary based on various factors, including market and individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process. The listed range above is a guideline, and the base salary range for this role may be modified.
